Cleaning the tiles has always been my least favourite household chore. It requires lots of scrubbing and wiping, and my hands usually get tired quite quickly. This is why I started looking for alternative ways to deep clean your tile floor, without the need to scrub it like crazy once a month. Turns out that every kind of tile floors requires lots of regular maintenance, if you want to have a clean and sparkling surface all the time. And trust me, this is not an easy task. It requires lots of free time and devotion, and nowadays not many people have the needed skills to keep their tile floor clean. But after lots of consideration, I managed to develop a system, which helps me to deep clean my tile flooring without putting much effort in it. Here are my tips:

Start from the top. When you have to clean tiles thoroughly, you can’t expect to manage everything with only a mop and a bucket of water. If you want quality results, which will last more than a day, you’ll have to start at the top. And in this case the top means to pick up the vacuum cleaner and remove all the dust and dirt from the surface. I guess you could also try cleaning it with the broom, but the chances are, that you will just misplace the dirt and it will come out from somewhere else. And most of the modern vacuum cleaners have a special setting for hard floor surfaces, which prevents scratching and other unpleasant effects. Vacuuming the surface properly will help make the mopping a lot easier, and will prevent the spreading of leftover dirt and grime.

Get to know the surface. When you clean your tile floors, you should be aware, that each type of tiles requires different types of maintenance. Some floors can be only cleaned with water and a mop, and some require special care and the usage of specialized detergents. For instance, the natural stone tiles, like marble and travertine, are quite sensitive to most of the cleaning products offered on the market. Some cleaners may work nice on every type of surfaces, but some will only make everything worse. Most tile cleaning specialists advise to use an alkaline based cleaner, because it can remove all kinds of grime from the tile without damaging the gentle surface.

Define the dirt. You can’t deep clean your tile floor properly, if you don’t know what kind of dirt you’re dealing with. For instance, most stains in the bathroom are being caused by soap scum, which settles on the surface of the tile after each bath. In this case you’ll need a strong detergent and a brush to remove the stains. And the dirt in the kitchen is usually caused by grease and food particles, so you’ll need a special cleaning detergent, which deals with this kind of things. Some specialists even recommend using a scrubber to remove the bigger pieces of dirt.

Prevention. Prevention is the best way to avoid staining on your tiles. I mean, you can clean them once in a while thoroughly, but it still won’t be the same thing as maintaining them every day. All you need to do is to sweep the floor once a day and clean the stains right after you make them. This way you will notice how your home will stay clean for longer without much effort.
